CM Assures all govt help to relief, rescue and reconstruction work
Karimganj, July 17 (HS): Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today took stock of flood situation in Barak valley and assured all government support for the relief, rescue and reconstruction works in the affected areas.
Chief Minister Sonowal first visited flood affected Karimganj district today and asked the district administration to prepare a detailed project report for geo-bag protection of the bank of river Longai which is creating havoc in the district.
It may be noted that the rivers namely Kushiyara, Longai, Shingla and Barak created havoc in Barak Valley for the last few days. Flood in Karimganj district have submerged major parts of the revenue circles in Patharkandi, Nilambazar and Karimganj Sadar.
Chairing a flood review meeting to assess the intensity of flood that affected the people of the district in the conference hall of DC office, Karimganj, Sonowal asked the functionaries associated with flood rescue and relief to submit detailed report highlighting the extent of damage caused by the flood for the government to take up reconstruction work at the earliest. He also emphasised on scientific study of the course of the rivers Longai, Kushiyara, Shingla and Barak so that the damage perpetrated by the rivers could be minimised.
He also informed in the meeting that the Prime Minister and Home Minister are in constant touch with the State government as they are taking update of the extent of damage of the flood and they are helping in every possible way to bail out the state from the onslaught of flood. He asked DC to sensitize all his departments including Health, Public Health Engineering, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry to be on their toes and take all precautionary measures to prevent outbreak of any epidemic. He also asked the DC to prepare the educational institutions which are converted into relief shelters for the flood victims ready to resume their academic services once they are vacated by the inmates.
Chief Minister Sonowal also visited relief camps set up at Karimganj Government H.S. School and Nagendra Nath Tilokchand MV School and interacted with the inmates there. He also asked Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department to provide adequate quantity of food items including baby food to the camp inmates. He also asked Joint Director Health Services to keep his medical teams ready to address any health-related issues in the relief camps. He also asked him to keep special attention on the health of children, women and old age people living in the relief camps.
Later Chief Minister Sonowal also visited Malini Beel Relief Camp at Silchar in Cachar district and spent time with the inmates there. He took stock of the facilities being provided to the relief camp inmates especially for the children and mothers. He also visited embankment of Bethukondi and inspected the status of the embankment.
The Chief Minister also held a review meeting on the prevailing flood situation in the district with government officials at DC office conference hall. He directed the officials to ensure adequate supply of food and arrange shelter for the affected people maintaining proper hygienic environment in the relief camps.
