Vicky Kaushal’s period drama Chhaava stormed the box office on its opening day, collecting ₹31 crore across all languages. The film, directed by Laxman Utekar, registered the biggest opening of 2025, surpassing Sky Force, which earned ₹15.30 crore on its first day. It also shattered Gully Boy’s record for the highest Valentine’s Day collection by an Indian film, which stood at ₹19.40 crore.

With 35.17% occupancy in Hindi, Chhaava became the highest opener of Vicky’s career, beating Uri: The Surgical Strike, which debuted at ₹8.20 crore. Trade tracker Sacnilk confirmed the strong performance, despite mixed reviews from critics.

The film, produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, narrates the story of Maratha king Sambhaji, played by Vicky Kaushal. Rashmika Mandanna stars as Maharani Yesubai, while Akshaye Khanna portrays Aurangzeb. Ashutosh Rana and Divya Dutta also play key roles. The film adapts Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel Chhava and features music by A.R. Rahman with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.

Critics offered mixed reactions, with Hindustan Times stating, “Chhaava could have been a powerful tribute to Sambhaji’s bravery, but weak editing and excessive glorification hold it back. However, its emotional depth and humanizing moments stand out.”

Despite criticism, Chhaava continues its box office dominance, setting new benchmarks for historical epics in 2025.
