A 19-year-old student was sexually assaulted, and her male friend attacked by two unidentified men on Anna University’s campus in Chennai. The incident occurred on the evening of December 23 and came to light after the survivor filed a police complaint on Tuesday.

The police arrested 37-year-old Gnanasekharan from Kotturpuram, a biryani seller who confessed to the crime. He also allegedly filmed the assault and blackmailed the victims. Authorities are investigating if he is connected to other crimes. Special teams have been formed to capture the second suspect.

In response, Greater Chennai Police and university security officials will conduct a joint security review to improve campus safety. On Wednesday, protests broke out outside the university, with members of SFI and the All India Women’s Welfare Federation demanding the arrest of the second suspect. University registrar J Prakash assured that full cooperation was being given to the police investigation.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai criticized the DMK government for its handling of law and order. He accused the government of turning Tamil Nadu into a “haven for criminals,” claiming that women no longer feel safe in the state. He also pointed out that the CCTVs near the crime scene were not functioning.

Annamalai demanded a statement from Chief Minister MK Stalin regarding the case, urging him to take responsibility for the incident and ensure justice for the victim. The BJP leader called for immediate action to address the safety concerns at Anna University and across the state.
