New Delhi/Bonn (Germany), Nov 19 (HS): “Cauvery Calling, a movement launched this July to revive one of peninsular India’s major lifelines, river Cauvery, is primarily an economic solution for debt-ridden farmers in the Cauvery basin and it also offers a significant ecological impact,” said Sadhguru, Founder, Isha Foundation.
About the ambitious goal of planting 2.4 billion trees in the Cauvery basin, Sadhguru said, “India’s population is 1.3 billion people. If all of us commit to plant just two trees in the next 12 years, you’ve got the number… our problems and solutions are not separate. If we harness a certain dimension, it becomes a solution. If we leave it unharnessed, it becomes a problem. So right now, the largest problem is the population. Will we harness this towards a solution or not is the only question.”
Sadhguru was accorded a warm welcome at the headquarters of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) during his visit to Bonn. This is Sadhguru’s first visit after Isha Foundation recently received UNCCD accreditation.
UNCCD Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw joined Sadhguru in a Twitter event where they discussed humanity’s responsibility towards protecting the planet’s natural resources, primarily land and water. The event was streamed live on Twitter. Sadhguru also addressed over 100 officials of the UN at Bonn after the conversation.
Thiaw spoke about how individual choices have an impact on land quality. “Each and everyone can have a positive impact on land,” said Thiaw. He said the choices we make in our food and clothing have a direct impact on the land. He also called upon religious leaders who have significant influence in their communities, to join hands in addressing land degradation issues as all religions recognise that land is sacred.
Earlier, UNCCD posted a welcome message for Isha Foundation on its Twitter handle: “We would like to welcome Isha Foundation as new Organization accredited as UNCCD observer to the UNCCD COP14. Isha Foundation implements projects to support individual growth, revitalize human spirit and restore the environment.”
UNCCD was established in 1994 to combat desertification globally. It’s Convention of 197 parties work together to improve living conditions for people in dry lands; maintain and restore land and soil productivity; and mitigate the effects of drought.
Ranked amongst the fifty most influential people in India, Sadhguru is a yogi, mystic, visionary and a New York Times bestselling author. Sadhguru was conferred the “Padma Vibhushan” by the Government of India in 2017, one of the highest civilian awards, accorded for exceptional and distinguished service.
Three decades ago, Sadhguru founded Isha Foundation, a non-profit human-service organization, with human well-being as its core commitment. Sadhguru has initiated powerful yoga programs for human transformation as well as various outreach projects to uplift under-served communities in rural India.
Isha Foundation, founded by Sadhguru, is a volunteer-run, international non-profit, human service organisation dedicated to cultivating human potential. Isha Foundation is operated by over 9 million volunteers from more than 300 centers spread worldwide. The Foundation is headquartered at Isha Yoga Center, set at the base of the Velliangiri Mountains in southern India, and at the Isha Institute of Inner Sciences on the spectacular Cumberland Plateau in middle Tennessee, USA.
