Authorities discovered three broken idols near the newly reopened Shiv-Hanuman Temple in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The ancient temple, opened on December 14 for the first time since 1978, had undergone a cleanup and restoration process.

During a well-digging operation near the temple, police recovered the idols on Monday. Sambhal Additional Superintendent of Police Shrish Chandra revealed that debris and soil had covered the idols. “The idols include one of Lord Ganesh and another resembling Lord Kartikeya. More details are being investigated,” Chandra said. The area has been cordoned off to ensure smooth excavation.

Meanwhile, devotees have expressed their reverence for the site. On Monday, they painted the temple walls with slogans like “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Har Har Mahadev.” The district administration also restored electricity, cleaned the premises, and installed CCTV cameras for security.

This discovery comes amidst ongoing tensions in Sambhal. Violence broke out on November 24 during a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque in the area. Clashes between protesters and security personnel led to four deaths and numerous injuries.

To address the unrest, the district administration launched an anti-encroachment drive. According to SDM Vandana Mishra, the campaign targets unauthorized constructions in public spaces. Similar efforts have been underway in nearby Chandauli for two months. Additionally, a crackdown on electricity theft has intensified in the district.

On Sunday, Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar and District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya visited the temple and offered prayers. They emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order while preserving the historical site.

As tensions remain high, authorities are closely monitoring the situation. The reopening of the temple has drawn attention to the region’s rich cultural heritage, while the recent violence underscores the challenges of balancing historical preservation with communal harmony.
