Kolkata,11 April(HS): A five-member BJP delegation met the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar at Raj Bhavan here this afternoon and apprised him of the alleged attempts of the state government to hide the actual figure of Coronavirus death and its deliberate attempts to prevent opposition workers from distributing relief to the poor and needy.

A five member state BJP delegation led by state party chief Dilip Ghosh,MP and comprising  other senior leaders like Mukul Roy,Rahul Sinha,Pratap Banerjee and Jay Prakash Mazumdar met the Governor at Raj Bhavan.

They brought to the notice of Governor Dhankar about the alleged attempts of the  state government to supress the death toll of COVID-19 in the state to bare minmium in a bid to prove to the rest of the world that the spread of the deadly disease in the state was very much under control.

According to them, though the Expert Medical Committee, set up by the state government itself, had announced about ten days ago that till them a total of 7 people including two women had lost their lives because of COVID-19,later succumbing under government pressure they withdrew their statement and said  not 7 but only 3 people had died of the disease so far.

However, later two more people had also been added to their list taking the overall death toll to only 5 so far when the actual figure was far more.

The issue of more and more daily tests of suspected COVID-19 patients might also come up for discussion during the proposed meeting as BJP also alleged that despite repeated warnings by the World Health Organisation and the Indian Council  for Medical Research (ICMR) no clear picture was being given by the government about the number of daily tests for the disease in the state.

This was yet another failure of the state health department to control  COVID-19, they said.

Moreover, blaming the ruling party leaders for allegedly preventing BJP and other opposition party workers from distributing  food packets and other essential commodities to the poor and the needy at this time of national crisis and taking over the entire responsibility of distributing the government aides by themselves to earn the public sympathy before the  next year’s Assembly poll as the only saviour of the poor, the BJP delegation  is likely to urged the Governor to look into the issue.

Inicidentally, the Governor himself only a couple of days ago blamed the state government for not consulting with him on how to go about in controlling the disease and had deliberately kept him in dark about its fight afainst COVID-19. As a result on 8 April  state Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha went to Raj Bhavan and briefed the Governor about  the government action plan.
