US President Joe Biden has approved Ukraine’s use of long-range ATACMS missiles against Russian targets. This decision marks a shift in US policy, as Ukraine has long urged for the removal of restrictions on these missiles to strike beyond its borders. The move follows Russia’s actions allowing North Korean soldiers to fight in Ukraine. The missiles can hit targets up to 300 km away and will aid Ukrainian forces in defending Russian-occupied territory, particularly in the Kursk region, which Kyiv is determined to hold.

While this decision is seen as important, it is not expected to drastically change the war’s course but will help level the playing field for Ukrainian forces. The approval also clears the path for Ukraine to use British and French long-range missiles.

The move follows increased Russian drone strikes on Ukraine, with over 2,000 launched in October alone. A coordinated missile and drone attack on Saturday killed at least 10 people. In response, Biden’s decision aims to strengthen Ukraine’s defense against these escalating Russian assaults.

Biden’s decision comes at a critical moment, as Ukraine faces a potential offensive by Russian and North Korean troops in Kursk. Ukrainian forces are already battling Russian advances in the Donetsk region. This shift in policy also underscores Biden’s urgency to continue supporting Ukraine amid concerns that his successor may scale back military aid.
