Chapra, Dec 18 (HS): Bhikhari Thakur was a social reformer, great thinker and symbol of Bhojpuri renaissance. Through his dramas, songs, and dances, he spearheaded tirade against ill practices and superstitions the relevance of which holds good today also.
Prof Dr. Lal Babu Yadav said that Bhikhar Thakur was influenced by resurrection in Bengal and made aware the people of Bhojpuri speaking regions of the prevalent sorry state of affairs of women, addiction, unmatched marriages and atrocities of Zamindars and Samants. This is why he is considered the first Dalit thinker of Bhojpuri as remarkable changes had dawned in Bhojpuri regions. He was speaking as chief speaker at a function focused on Bhikhari Thakur on the premises of Ram Jaipal statue place here today.
While speaking at the function, Dr. Yadav said that the result of awareness Bhikhari Thakur has spread, was obvious today in the form of changed political scenario. Congress has tested decline while sub alter community has become the nucleus of power today.
Dr. Janendra Dost, a research scholar on Bhikhari Thakur in JNU, Delhi, observed that comparing Bhikhari Thakur with Shakespeare is not fair as Bhikhari Thakur was more talented and multidimensional while Shakespeare had limited insight.
Anniversary of Bhikhari Thakur was conducted as a state function and Saran commissioner Robert L. Chaungthu, DIG Vijay Kumar Verma, DM Subrat Kumar Sen, SP Har Kishore Rai, Mayor Priya Singh, and other dignitaries garlanded the statue of Bhikhari Thakur.
