Bengaluru court jails estranged wife, family in Atul Subhash suicide case
A Bengaluru court has sent Nikita Singhania, the estranged wife of techie Atul Subhash, and two of her family members to 14-day judicial custody. The Bengaluru police arrested the trio in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and brought them to Bengaluru, where a magistrate remanded them to custody. Meanwhile, another accused, Nikita’s uncle, Sushil Singhania, remains at large.
Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old software engineer, died by suicide in Bengaluru, leaving behind a video and a detailed note. In both, he accused his wife and her family of harassment, false legal cases, and driving him to take his life. The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many demanding the arrest of the accused.
The video revealed allegations of prolonged harassment through multiple matrimonial cases. Subhash and Nikita were locked in legal battles over divorce, alimony, and child custody in a family court in Uttar Pradesh. Following his death, Bengaluru police filed an FIR against Nikita and her family under Sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 3(5) (criminal act with common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The accused sought anticipatory bail from the Allahabad High Court, but the matter remains pending. Meanwhile, Nikita and her family face intense scrutiny as public anger grows.
This case has reignited debates about misuse of dowry and domestic violence laws. A public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the Supreme Court now seeks guidelines to prevent such misuse while ensuring fairness in the legal process. The court’s decision is expected to address concerns over legal exploitation and its devastating consequences.
