Bangladesh Risks ICC Sanctions for ‘Unacceptable’ Conduct During India Test

Bangladesh started strong in the first Test against India in Chennai but faced challenges by the end of the opening day. They reduced India to 34 for 3 and later 144 for 6. However, a remarkable partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket saved India.
By day’s end, India reached 339 for 6, with Ashwin unbeaten at 102 and Jadeja scoring 86 not out.
While Bangladesh struggled, a more significant issue loomed. They fell 10 overs short of the target, even after receiving a half-hour extension. This could lead to penalties from the International Cricket Council (ICC). According to article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship rules, a team loses one point for each penalty over incurred during the Round Stage.
This penalty adds to Bangladesh’s troubles, as they were docked three points and fined 15 percent of their match fee last month for being three overs short in their Test against Pakistan.
In the match against India, Bangladesh managed to bowl only 80 overs in total. They bowled 23 overs in the first session, 25 in the second, and 32 in the final session of Day 1.
Commentator Harsha Bhogle criticized their performance on X, stating, “Bangladesh will have bowled less than 80 overs despite the extra half hour. It is unacceptable.”
