Australia Today, the news outlet banned by Canada for airing External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s press conference, responded on Friday, affirming its commitment to transparency and free press. Jitarth Jai Bharadwaj, the Managing Editor, stated the outlet remains undeterred by the ban.

He emphasized, “We remain steadfast in our mission to bring important stories to the public,” adding that the overwhelming support from their audience strengthens their resolve.

The ban followed the airing of Jaishankar’s remarks in Australia, where he discussed the India-Canada diplomatic standoff and Khalistani extremism. Canada imposed the ban hours after the broadcast, leading to sharp criticism from India.

The Ministry of External Affairs condemned Canada’s actions, calling it “surprising” and accusing the country of hypocrisy regarding freedom of speech. India pointed out the inconsistency in Canada’s stance on press freedom, especially given its criticisms of India.

Australia Today expressed disappointment, calling the ban “difficult” for its team and supporters of open journalism. Despite the setback, the outlet received significant support from its audience, which the team recognized as a beacon of strength.

The support included sharing coverage on other platforms and raising concerns about press freedom.

The tensions between India and Canada have been escalating, particularly after Ottawa’s allegations that New Delhi was involved in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

This diplomatic rift underscores the complex relationship between the two nations. Despite the ban, Australia Today vowed to continue its mission, with a strong emphasis on delivering stories that matter, upholding accuracy and transparency.
