ATP, WTA postponed their championship till June 7
New Delhi, 19 March (HS): The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) have now decided to start their championship from June 7, extending the dates of all their competitions. This decision has been taken due to the increasing influence of the Coronavirus worldwide.
ATP and WTA said in a joint statement on Wednesday, ‘The professional tennis season has now been postponed until 7 June 2020, including the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF (International Tennis Federation) World Tennis Tour.
With this information, the entire European season of clay courts for both men and women has been postponed. The decision to postpone the French Open Grand Slam tournament till September was also taken two days earlier.
ITF President David Haggerty said at the postponement of the competitions, “In this challenging time it is more important than ever for our sport to provide as much certainty as possible to all those affected by these postponed competitions.”
The Corona virus has killed more than 8000 people worldwide and the virus has spread to more than 130 countries of the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared it an epidemic last week.
