Arms and ammunition recovered near Kolkata
Baruipur (South 24 Parganas) /Kolkata,19 June (HS): A huge cache of countrymade arms and ammunition were today recovered from an undercover arms dealer at Raghunathpur under Baruipur Police station area in South 24 Pargans districts causing concern to the local people.
According to the police, acting on a tip off a team of plainclothes police personnel from Baruipur intercepted one auto rickshaw at Rabhunathpur, about 30 km from Kolkata, and recovered seven long barrel pipe guns, one short barrel gun, two seven mm revolvers, a one shoter gun and over 100 rounds of live cartridges from its occupant identified as one Shawkat Molla who was immediately arrested.
Following his interrogation it was revealed that arms trafficker Molla who is known as a popular tailor in the locality, used to operate an illegal gun making factory undercover near his shop for long without creating any suspicion among the local people.
Though it was not yet known where these arms were to be delivered,the possibility of the involvement of an inter state arms gang was not ruled out by the investigating officials.
He could also be the main source of arms supply in the bordering districts during a number of violent incidents there, they said and had been making all out efforts to know further details of the entire gang and arrest other members.
Incidentally, today’s recovery was considered to be one of the largest illegal consignments of arms in recent times in South Bengal,the police said.
