Anti-CAA Protests flare up in Chennai: Protesters lathicharged

Chennai February 15: Around 500 people continued their overnight protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Population Register (NPR) after Chennai police lath-charged the protestors on Friday late last night at in Washermanpet area in Chennai.

Hundreds of members of Islamic outfits took to the streets and blocked roads at many places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Friday late night, hours after the Chennai police resorted to lathicharge in an attempt to disperse a large group of anti-CAA protesters at Washermenpet in Chennai. Joint Commissioner of Police Vijayakumari and the Rajamangalam Inspector were injured in the melee.

Some protesters were beaten up by the police.The police heightened surveillance across the State.Those injured in the lathicharge and were treated at Govt hospital.
Police sources say yesterday late last night group of protestors were nabbed by the police for staging a demonstration near the Kannan Roundtana, despite warning them to disperse. As the message spread through social media sites hundreds of people gathered near the Pencil Factory in Old Washermenpet to protest for the same cause and continued the protests today too.

Today morning large numbers of people gathered at key junctions in Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Salem, Tiruchi, Vaniyambadi, Tirupathur, Krishnagiri, Villupuram and many other places in the State condemning the alleged “police assault”. Sources say long distance bus services were hit at many places. Arterial roads, including Anna Salai and Jawaharlal Nehru Salai in Vadapalani in Chennai, and parts of the East Coast Road witnessed major traffic snarls.
The protestors, including women and children, raised slogans against the implementation of CAA, NRC and NPR.
and were also found demanding justice for the people who faced police brutality on yesterday late night.
