Amaravathi (Andhra Pradesh), July 04 (HS): Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has asked the Assembly members to be punctual to the session and come prepared with the subject that would be coming up for discussion.

Addressing the two-day Orientation programme for the MLAs on the etiquette and the rules and regulations to be followed during the assembly session, he said, ‘Andhra Pradesh assembly proceedings should be on the lines of the state assemblies that have the highest regard for parliamentary practices and the forum should be used for purposeful discussions on public issues and our members should do their homework before taking up the mike in the assembly to speak on the issue. They should keep in mind that public speaking is different to that of speaking in assembly and we have to cut a sorry figure if we do not have the material or data to counter the argument of the opponents.’

‘While we were in Opposition, we used to do a lot of homework from the early hours and our Advisors DA Somayajulu and GVD Krishna Mohan would give the needed inputs and when we speak in the Assembly armed with facts and figures, the satisfaction we get is immense,’ he added.

It is imperative that all members come to the House at least 30 minutes early, know the listings and be prepared for the subject they would be taking up.  Similarly, they need to meet after the day’s proceedings to know what is on the next day’s agenda which would yield a good result, he added.

The orientation programme is being taken up as 70 of the 175 MLAs are first timers and such training classes are being held in the Assembly premises ‘to avoid spending of public money lavishly as the previous government has done by holding such meetings in star hotels’.

Reddy made it quite clear that  the assembly sessions in our government would be very different from that of the previous ones as we respect democracy and allow the Opposition to speak and we reply in a firm manner. There are instances where Chandrababu Naidu has read out in the House incorrect data and later said it was done only to know the correct figures from the government. Such tactics will be tackled effectively if we have the material, facts and figures, he said. An orator’s speech backed with data is always better than that of those speaking extempore, he said.
