BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya criticized West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday for her handling of a protest at Oxford University. Protesters confronted Banerjee with slogans accusing her of allowing violence against Hindus and women. Malviya claimed Banerjee appeared a “meek shadow” of herself and called for a free and fair election in 2026, asserting that she would lose without police and state machinery misuse.

During her speech at Kellogg College, Oxford University, on Thursday, Banerjee faced interruptions from protesting students. They raised concerns about post-poll violence and the RG Kar College scandal. Banerjee responded, “Tell your party to increase its strength in our state so they can fight with us.”

Malviya, in a post on X, accused Banerjee of hiding behind the West Bengal police. “The usually belligerent Mamata Banerjee was a meek shadow of herself when angry Hindu Bengalis confronted her with slogans condemning her for the genocide of Hindus and the rape and murder of women, including cases at RG Kar and Sandeshkhali,” he wrote. He further demanded fair elections, stating, “If the police stop acting as TMC cadres, she will surrender like any weak dictator.”

Malviya also called Banerjee a disgrace to West Bengal. He claimed the Hindu Bengali diaspora wanted her removed as chief minister for tarnishing Bengal’s legacy. “Just a few posters held up to Mamata Banerjee… She is a disgrace to West Bengal. The Hindu Bengali diaspora wants her out for destroying Bengal’s legacy and putting them through such ignominy,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal accused Banerjee of spreading anti-India rhetoric during her Oxford speech. He compared her to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, claiming both push anti-India agendas abroad. “Her politics revolves around facilitating the entry of Bangladeshis into Bengal and the country, even providing them with Aadhar cards. She stands against India,” Jaiswal told ANI.

During the Q&A session, Banerjee responded to a comment about India overtaking the UK as the fifth-largest economy. The interviewer predicted India would become the world’s third-largest economy by 2060. Banerjee expressed skepticism. “I will differ from that… If an economic war-like situation is going on in the world, how do we expect that we will gain? Let us hope for the gain, we can only hope,” she said.

The Oxford protest and Malviya’s sharp remarks add to the growing tension between the BJP and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. With the 2026 West Bengal elections approaching, the political rivalry continues to escalate.
