PRAYAGRAJ: March 17 (HS): In a shocking move, Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University, Sangeeta Srivastava has shot off a letter to the DM, Bhanu Chandra Goswami stating that the loud noise of azan is depriving her of sleep in the early morning hours. She requested him to take some action as Azan from the nearby mosque disrupts everybody’s sleep. She claimed while speaking to HS over the phone, “Every morning at around 5.30, the loud sound of the loudspeaker disrupts our sleep. Why are we harassed, pestered, and tortured with sleep deprivation for no fault of ours? Sleep is disrupted by the loud noise and our hectic busy schedule leaves us with very little time to compensate for the loss of sleep, which causes headaches throughout the day and affects our productivity and functioning as well.”

She said that though she was not against any religion but during Ramzan, the announcements over the microphone begin at 4 am which disturbs people. Citing a court verdict, she said that “Your freedom ends where my nose begins”. The vice-chancellor has sent copies of her letter to the divisional commissioner and SSP. DM has said that he would take appropriate action as per the rules.

Prof Sangeeta Srivastava requested the DM to take action regarding her complaint.
