All four convicts of Nirbhaya case were hanged to death
New Delhi, March 20 (HS): All the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape cum murder case were hanged to death at 5:30 am on Friday at Tihar jail.
The four convicts Aakshya Thakur, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta were lodged in Tihar jail after they were arrested by Delhi police in 2012 rape cum murder case and were awarded death sentence by Delhi court.
Today at 4 am, all the four convicts were woken up and asked to take a bath. The four were then asked to change their clothes and offered breakfast and thereafter taken for medical checkup, said a jail official.
The official further said that at 5:20 am, their faces were covered with clothes and hands were tied behind their back and they all were marched to the ‘execution chamber’s.
The duty magistrate present there asked their last wish and signed the death warrant in the presence of other senior jail officials. The Director General of Tihar Jail Sandeep Goel confirmed hanging to death of all four convicts at around 5:45 am.
The bodies fo all four have been sent for autopsy to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital and thereafter would be handed over to their relatives, said the police.
Except Pawan Gupta, all the three convicts were quite. Sources said that Pawan was crying and asking for mercy.
The 23 year old paramedical student Nirbhaya was gangrape in a moving bus on the fateful night of December 16, 2012 by six persons including a juvenile. Of these one had already committed suicide in Tihar jail.
Nirbhaya and her male friend boarded the private bus from Munireka. Thereafter all the six first thrashed the male friend and took turns to rape her. Thereafter both were thrown out of bus near Aerocity.
The passers-by informed the police who took the victim and her friend to hospital where Nirbhaya succumbed to her injuries on December 29.
