Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the tech industry at an unprecedented pace, according to Wipro executive chairman Rishad Premji. Speaking at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2024, Premji highlighted the significant productivity gains AI can bring. However, he cautioned that as AI advances, some jobs will disappear. He stressed the need to reskill workers to stay relevant in an evolving workforce. “AI will automate tasks, not jobs,” Premji explained, advocating for a focus on tasks rather than job titles.

Premji also emphasized the importance of adopting AI responsibly. He pointed out the need to eliminate biases from data sets and establish safeguards to ensure AI is safely scaled. He believes agility, adaptability, and critical thinking will be key skills for the future workforce. Wipro is increasingly focusing on these non-technical skills to prepare employees for future challenges.

Premji also discussed India’s growing role in global technology. He noted that India has shifted from being a low-cost destination to a talent hub, with more companies now choosing India for its skilled workforce. He sees India becoming the tech capital of the world. However, he warned that staying relevant in the face of rapid technological advancements will be a challenge.

Premji called for government action to create regulatory frameworks for AI while fostering innovation. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government, industry, and individuals in addressing skill gaps and promoting innovation. India’s potential is also evident in sectors like education, healthcare, and digital public infrastructure.

On work-life balance, Premji emphasized the importance of flexibility, noting that Wipro allows employees to manage two days a week on their own terms while working three days in the office. He also mentioned the company’s focus on mental health, offering employees access to therapists and providing training for managers.

Regarding a potential Trump administration, Premji said the tech services industry has thrived regardless of government changes. He believes a pro-business environment with reduced taxes and regulations could benefit the industry, although inflationary pressures and tariffs should be monitored.
