PRAYAGRAJ, March 16 (HS): Mayor Prayagraj, Abhilasha Gupta ‘Nandi’ was unanimously elected vice president (VP) of UP Mayors Council on Tuesday.  Barreily Mayor, Umesh Gautam has been elected president. “I will work towards expanding powers of the mayors and councilors. For this all possible efforts will be made to effectively implement the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act throughout the country. I strongly believe mayors should have administrative authority in matters related to the city. We will discuss these issues with the states and the central government,” said Abhilasha Gupta while speaking to HS.

“The council will focus on smart development of cities. Besides, the centre of attention will be on maintenance of sanitation, hygiene and water conservation. UP Mayors Council will ensure municipal corporations adopt best practices of each other. The demand to increase powers of mayor is genuine. Mayors need to have command over the officials to preserve the public interest. I believe that mayors should be given power to write the confidential report of municipal commissioners. This will ensure they listen to the mayor and work responsibly for the development of city and welfare of citizens,” she added.

Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma said, “The maximum responsibility for the success of both Swachh Bharat Mission and Smart City project is on mayors. There is a necessity to increase powers of mayors so that they can properly deliver on aspirations of the people. Government of Uttar Pradesh will take suitable actions in regard. Government of Uttar Pradesh will work for effective implementation of the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act, increasing the powers of mayors.”
