6 nabbed for stealing ornaments under guise of giving it a shine

PRAYAGRAJ, March 16 (HS): Joint team of SOG and Colonelganj police arrested six thieves from Chaitham Lines area on Tuesday evening for stealing gold and other ornaments under guise of giving it a shine. SOG team received a tip off that members of a Bihar gang are hiding in a dilapidated house in Chaitham Lines under Colonelganj police station and discussion are going on for sharing looted ornaments and other valuables.

The police immediately swung into action and arrived at the spot. Thieves on spotting police pulled out their pistol and fired on the police. However, they were later arrested after a brief chase. Gold and silver ornaments worth Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 57,000 in cash was recovered from their possession. Three country made pistols, live cartridges, three motorcycles, cleaning powder, sales book, identity cards of marketing company were recovered from their possession. The arrested accused have been identified as Arun Shah, Sanjay Kumar Shah, Deepak Kumar Shah and Shravan Kumar, all residents of Bhagalpur, Bihar and Vicky Sahu, Rajesh Gupta of Naini Prayagraj.

Explaining their modus operandi, inspector Coloneloganj told HS, “They used to walk into residential areas for selling products of Patanjali company and claimed to have a chemical powder that cleans and brings shine to gold ornaments. The accused claiming to be representatives of Patanjali and Ujala Company spoke very sweetly and won the confidence of their victims. Initially, they clean utensils and then persuaded ladies to get their ornaments cleaned.” Police said that the gang used to target women staying alone in the absence of any other male members. “They used to trick the women on the pretext of cleaning their gold ornaments and later replace the genuine ornaments with duplicate ones,” said a police official. Police said that the gang is involved in around seven similar cases in the district. “We are further investigating to verify their antecedents,” added the police official.
