Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Delhi Police for Detaining Climate Activist, Elderly at Singhu Border
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, sharply criticized the Delhi Police on Tuesday for detaining climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and his supporters at the Singhu border. He called the action “unacceptable,” particularly because elderly citizens and Army veterans were among those detained.
Gandhi questioned why peaceful protesters, fighting for environmental and constitutional rights, faced such treatment. Blaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he vowed to break the ‘Chakravyuh’ and ensure that Ladakh’s voice would be heard.
Wangchuk and his supporters were detained late Monday night while marching from Leh to New Delhi. Their goal was to press the government to engage in dialogue with Ladakh’s leaders. One of their key demands is the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This move would grant Ladakh law-making powers to protect its land and cultural heritage.
For over five years, Wangchuk has advocated for statehood for Ladakh. During the march, he emphasized that their cause is crucial for preserving Ladakh’s unique identity. Gandhi, echoing these sentiments, condemned the detention as a violation of democratic principles and basic human rights.
The detention of peaceful marchers, especially elderly citizens and Army veterans, has sparked outrage. Gandhi’s criticism highlights the growing tension between activists and the government over Ladakh’s future.
