Senior IPS officer Clay Khongsai has taken charge as Inspector General of the Guwahati Command of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The appointment places him in a key operational role within the central armed police force under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Khongsai belongs to the 1996 batch of the Indian Police Service. Over the years, he has served in several important positions and built extensive experience in security and border management. Most recently, he worked as Inspector General in the Eastern Frontier of the ITBP, based in Lucknow.

Now, with this new responsibility, Khongsai will lead the Guwahati Command of the force. The command holds strategic importance because it oversees operations and coordination across parts of the northeastern region. This area plays a critical role in India’s border security framework.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police functions as one of India’s key paramilitary forces. The organisation primarily guards the India-China border along the Himalayan region. At the same time, it also supports internal security operations and disaster response efforts when required.

In recent years, the government has strengthened the ITBP’s operational structure to improve coordination and response capability. Leadership roles within different commands therefore carry significant responsibility. Officers in these positions guide field formations, monitor security developments and coordinate with other agencies.

Against this backdrop, Khongsai’s appointment comes at a time when border management remains a top priority for the government. His previous experience in the force is expected to help him oversee operations and administrative responsibilities in the Guwahati Command effectively.

Officials in the security establishment view such leadership transitions as part of the broader effort to maintain operational readiness within India’s border guarding forces. With Khongsai now heading the Guwahati Command, the ITBP continues its focus on strengthening vigilance and coordination across sensitive regions.
