ABVP candidate threatened during Jadavpur University election
Kolkata, 19 February (HS):As the excitement surrounding the Students Council’s elections in Jadavpur University has reached its crescendo hours before the poll this afternoon, one Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) candidate alleged that he was being threatened by members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) with dire consequences if he contested.
In a formal complaint to the Registrar of the University the candidate of ABVP, which has been fighting for the first time in the students Council election in Jadavpur University, alleged that barely hours before the start of the polling he was repeatedly threatened with dire consequences by a section of SFI supporters if he dared to fight the election. ‘I am feeling very insecure’, he said
Incidentally, SFI has dominating presence in the university for long and has won almost all the office bearers posts in the past .
However, it is not yet known what action the university authority would recommend to ensure the security of the ABVP candidate in the middle of such threats.
Meanwhile, since the announcement of the Students Council elections in the university by the Governing Body a few days ago, hardcore election campaign has begun with the participation of the members of all students unions, affiliated to different political parties.
Though the candidates of SFI and the Trinamool Congress Students Union have the likely possibility of winning most of the seats in the contest of major office bearers for this year, those belonging to ABVP have refused to budge and hoped to spring surprise by clinching some important seats in their maiden attempts.
The results of the elections, in which over 3,000 students are expected to participate from all streams would be known tomorrow.
