A Canadian police officer was suspended on Monday after a video surfaced showing him at a pro-Khalistan protest outside a Hindu temple in Brampton. Authorities identified the officer as Harinder Sohi, a Sergeant with the Peel Regional Police. In the video, Sohi held a Khalistan flag while protestors chanted anti-India slogans, prompting significant backlash.

Peel Regional Police’s Media Relations Officer Richard Chin confirmed the suspension, stating, “We are aware of a video circulating on social media that shows an off-duty officer involved in a demonstration.” He added that the officer was suspended in line with the Community Safety and Policing Act. An investigation is underway, and further details will be released once complete.

The protest escalated into violence as Indian consular officials visited the Hindu Sabha Mandir temple. Reports indicated that clashes erupted between protestors holding Khalistan banners and individuals displaying India’s national flag. Videos from the scene showed fights breaking out, with people striking each other with poles. The police had increased their presence to maintain public order during the protests, which eventually moved to other locations in Mississauga.

Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah stated, “We respect the right to protest peacefully but will not tolerate violence and criminal acts.” He assured the public that those participating in violent acts would face arrest and charges.

The incident sparked outrage among Canadian political leaders and drew a rare comment from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi amid rising diplomatic tensions between India and Canada. PM Modi condemned the “deliberate attack” on the Hindu temple, urging the Canadian government to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law. He emphasized that such violence would not weaken India’s resolve.

Additionally, India’s Minister of External Affairs expressed deep concern for the safety of Indian nationals in Canada. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the violent acts at the Hindu Sabha Temple and called on the Canadian government to protect places of worship from such attacks. The situation highlights the growing tensions between communities and the urgent need for dialogue and safety measures in the wake of such incidents.
