Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor, following tradition. In a letter to the Union Government, CJI Chandrachud proposed Justice Khanna’s name as the next Chief Justice of India. CJI Chandrachud is set to retire on November 10, 2024.

If the government approves the recommendation, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India. He is currently the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, known for his rulings on civil liberties and constitutional matters.

This move is in line with the longstanding convention of appointing the senior-most judge as the next CJI. Justice Khanna’s elevation would come at a crucial time, as the judiciary faces several significant cases, including those related to electoral reforms, constitutional rights, and economic issues.

CJI Chandrachud’s term has seen landmark judgments on privacy, equality, and digital rights. His recommendation of Justice Khanna ensures continuity in leadership and upholds the Supreme Court’s tradition of merit-based appointments.

Justice Khanna’s potential appointment signals his readiness to take on the top judicial role, bringing his vast experience in civil rights and constitutional matters to the forefront of India’s legal landscape. The final decision now rests with the Union Government.
